Possible Causes
Blocked refill flow control, Clogged refill port in valve body, Defective valve motor not reaching refill position, Internal valve leak bypassing refill
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and place the softener in bypass. Depressurize the system before opening the valve.
Steps:
- 1. Confirm no refill: After a regeneration, check the brine tank. If there is no water covering the bottom, refill is not occurring.
- 2. Inspect refill flow control: Locate the refill flow control (often a small button or orifice in the valve body or brine line). Remove and clean it under running water to clear debris.
- 3. Check valve operation: Manually advance the valve through the regeneration steps (per Sterling manual) and listen for water entering the brine tank during the refill step. If the motor does not move to the correct position, suspect the motor or cam.
- 4. Examine internal seals: Worn seals can cause water to bypass the refill port. If you see internal leakage or hear water flowing when it should not, rebuild the valve with a seal and spacer kit.
- 5. Test after cleaning: Reassemble, take the unit out of bypass, and run a manual regeneration. Confirm that water enters the brine tank during the refill stage.
