Possible Causes
Collapsed resin bed, Plugged upper distributor or riser tube, Jammed piston in closed position, Severely clogged inlet screen
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Place the unit in bypass to restore temporary water service. Depressurize before removing the valve head or plumbing.
Steps:
- 1. Confirm bypass restores flow: If water flows normally in bypass, the restriction is inside the softener.
- 2. Inspect inlet screen: Some Sterling valves have an inlet screen; remove and clean it if present.
- 3. Check piston position: Remove the valve motor and manually move the piston to ensure it is not stuck in a closed position.
- 4. Inspect resin bed: Remove the valve head and look for resin packed tightly into the top of the tank or into the valve. A collapsed bed may require replacing the cation resin and upper distributor.
- 5. Professional help: If the resin tank is severely fouled or the riser tube is damaged, contact a technician for media replacement.
