Possible Causes
Resin fouled with iron, No iron removal media, Insufficient backwash, High iron beyond softener design
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Standard; avoid inhaling dust from iron cleaners.
Steps:
- 1. Test iron level: Use an iron test kit to determine raw water iron concentration.
- 2. Clean resin: Run a resin cleaner (iron remover) through the Sterling softener according to product instructions.
- 3. Adjust backwash: Ensure backwash time is set to Sterling's recommended value for iron-bearing water.
- 4. Consider pre-treatment: If iron is very high, add a dedicated iron filter ahead of the softener and/or replace the resin media if heavily fouled.
