Possible Causes

Failed Tapworks valve motor, Jammed rotor disc in control valve, Broken motor drive gear, Motor harness disconnected

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the softener before working on the valve or motor. Close the bypass valves to isolate the softener from the plumbing if you need to remove the valve head.

  • Listen for motor operation: Plug the unit back in and manually start a regeneration. If you hear no motor noise at all, suspect the motor or its wiring.
  • Check motor wiring: Remove the control cover and locate the small motor on the Tapworks valve head. Ensure the 2‑wire or 3‑wire connector is fully seated on the control board and on the motor.
  • Inspect for mechanical jam: With power disconnected, remove the motor (usually held by 2 screws). Try to rotate the main cam/rotor disc by hand. It should turn smoothly with some resistance. If it is seized, debris or scale may be jamming the valve.
  • Clean the valve head: Remove the valve cover and inspect the rotor disc and seals for foreign objects (sand, resin beads, scale). Rinse with clean water and reassemble.
  • Test the motor: With a multimeter, check for continuity across the motor terminals. An open circuit indicates a failed motor that must be replaced.
  • If the motor is noisy, stalls, or overheats: Replace the Tapworks valve motor/gearbox assembly. Refit, reconnect the harness, and run a manual regeneration to confirm E2 is cleared.
