Possible Causes

Failed backup capacitor or battery on control PCB, Faulty Tapworks control PCB, Power interruptions or unstable supply, Corroded PCB tracks

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect mains power before opening the control housing.

  • Verify stable power: If the softener is on a circuit with frequent outages or surges, consider using a surge protector. Check that the plug fits firmly in the outlet.
  • Reset and reprogram: Unplug for 5 minutes, then plug in and set the time, regeneration time, and hardness. Observe whether the settings are retained after several hours and a power cycle.
  • Inspect the PCB: Remove the control panel and visually inspect the board for corrosion, burnt components, or leaking capacitors. Any bulging or leaking component indicates PCB failure.
  • Clean light corrosion: If minor oxidation is present on connectors, clean with electrical contact cleaner and a soft brush, then reconnect.
  • If the clock still resets or E3 returns: The internal memory/clock circuit is defective. Replace the Tapworks control PCB. Ensure the replacement board is the correct model for your Tapworks softener and transfer any jumper settings as per the service manual.
