Possible Causes

Blocked Tapworks turbine flow meter, Failed Hall‑effect flow sensor, Broken or pinched flow sensor cable, Incorrect installation direction of flow meter

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Close the inlet and outlet valves and open the bypass before removing any plumbing components. Depressurize the system by opening a nearby tap.

  • Check for flow indication: On models with a flow icon, run a tap. If the icon does not flash or the display does not show flow, suspect the flow meter.
  • Inspect wiring: Remove the control cover and trace the small cable from the flow meter to the control board. Ensure it is not cut, pinched, or disconnected. Reseat the connector.
  • Remove and clean the flow meter: Isolate and depressurize the softener. Remove the flow meter assembly from the inlet side of the Tapworks valve. Inspect the turbine for debris (sand, scale, resin beads). Rinse thoroughly and ensure the turbine spins freely.
  • Check installation orientation: Confirm the arrow on the flow meter body points in the direction of water flow. Reinstall correctly if reversed.
  • Test operation: Restore water and power, then run water at a tap. Confirm the display registers flow and that E4 clears.
  • If no signal is detected and wiring is good: Replace the Tapworks turbine flow meter / sensor assembly.
