Possible Causes
Clogged inlet screen, Fouled resin bed, Partially closed bypass valve, Undersized control valve or plumbing adapters
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you need to disconnect plumbing, shut off water and relieve pressure first.
- Compare in bypass vs service: Place the Tier1 softener in BYPASS. If pressure improves significantly, the restriction is within the softener.
- Check bypass and shutoff valves: Ensure all valves are fully open and the bypass is not partially engaged.
- Inspect inlet screen: Many Tier1 valves have an inlet screen. Shut off water, remove the inlet fitting, and clean any sediment from the screen.
- Regenerate and backwash: Run a manual regeneration and ensure a strong backwash flow to flush the resin bed. Observe the drain line for heavy sediment discharge.
- Resin condition: If flow remains poor, the resin may be fouled or compacted. Consider replacing the cation exchange resin and checking the distributor tube for blockage.
