Possible Causes
Damaged tank O-ring, Cracked mineral tank neck, Cross-threaded control head, Debris on sealing surfaces
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Shut off water to the softener, place it in BYPASS, and relieve pressure by opening a nearby faucet.
- Inspect external fittings: Confirm the leak is from the tank neck, not from plumbing connections or the bypass.
- Remove control head: Unscrew the Tier1 control head from the mineral tank carefully. Support the head to avoid stressing plumbing.
- Check O-ring and neck: Inspect the large tank O-ring for cuts, flattening, or deformation. Examine the tank neck for cracks or chips.
- Clean and reseat: Clean the tank neck and O-ring groove. Lubricate the new or existing O-ring with silicone-based lubricant (never petroleum). Reinstall the head, tightening evenly by hand.
- Replace damaged parts: If the tank neck is cracked, the mineral tank must be replaced. If only the O-ring is damaged, replace the tank O-ring with a Tier1-compatible part.
