Possible Causes

Incorrect hardness setting, Bypass valve partially open, Exhausted or fouled resin bed, Incorrect regeneration frequency or capacity setting

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you need to open plumbing, shut off water and relieve pressure first.

  • Verify bypass position: Ensure the Tier1 bypass valve is fully in the SERVICE position, not in BYPASS or halfway between.
  • Check hardness and capacity settings: Enter the programming menu and confirm the hardness matches your water test (in grains per gallon). Ensure the capacity and reserve settings are appropriate for your household usage.
  • Increase regeneration frequency: Temporarily lower the capacity or increase the regeneration frequency so the unit regenerates more often. Monitor water softness over several days.
  • Test resin condition: If the unit is older or has been exposed to iron, the resin may be fouled. Perform a resin cleaning using a resin cleaner product compatible with Tier1 systems, following label directions.
  • Replace resin if needed: If hardness persists despite correct programming and cleaning, replace the cation exchange resin in the mineral tank. This is a more advanced repair and may require a professional.
