Softener brine tank forms a solid mass of salt at the bottom (salt mushing)

Safety: Lifting wet salt can be heavy; use proper lifting technique.

• Remove salt mush: Shut off water and place the softener in BYPASS. Scoop out the mushy salt from the bottom of the brine tank into buckets.
• Clean the tank: Rinse the brine tank with warm water to remove remaining sludge. Avoid dumping salty water on lawns or plants.
• Refill with quality salt: After cleaning, add fresh, high-purity pellet salt recommended by US Water Systems.
• Periodic maintenance: Plan to clean the brine tank every 1–2 years to prevent mushing.
