Possible Causes
Low-quality salt with impurities, Excessive moisture, Long-term accumulation without cleaning
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Lifting wet salt can be heavy; use proper lifting technique.
- Remove salt mush: Shut off water and place the softener in BYPASS. Scoop out the mushy salt from the bottom of the brine tank into buckets.
- Clean the tank: Rinse the brine tank with warm water to remove remaining sludge. Avoid dumping salty water on lawns or plants.
- Refill with quality salt: After cleaning, add fresh, high-purity pellet salt recommended by US Water Systems.
- Periodic maintenance: Plan to clean the brine tank every 1–2 years to prevent mushing.
