Possible Causes
Fouled resin bed, Plugged inlet/outlet screens, Undersized softener for flow demand, Partially closed bypass or shutoff valves
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off water and depressurize before opening plumbing connections.
- Bypass test: Place the softener in BYPASS. If pressure returns to normal, the restriction is within the softener.
- Check valves: Ensure all inlet/outlet valves are fully open and the bypass is correctly positioned.
- Inspect screens and flow controls: Remove inlet/outlet fittings and any flow restrictors. Clean sediment or iron buildup.
- Regenerate and clean resin: Perform a manual regeneration. For iron-fouled systems, use a resin cleaner recommended by US Water Systems to restore resin capacity.
- Consider resizing: If pressure drops only at high demand, your softener may be undersized. Consult US Water Systems for a larger valve or tank size.
