Possible Causes
High water pressure, Rapid closing valves, Loose plumbing, Worn piston or seals causing chatter
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: High pressure can be hazardous. If you suspect very high pressure, consider calling a plumber.
- Check water pressure: Use a pressure gauge on a nearby hose bib. Ideal pressure is 40–80 psi. If above 80 psi, install or service a pressure reducing valve (PRV).
- Secure plumbing: Ensure pipes around the softener are properly strapped and supported to reduce movement.
- Inspect piston and seals: If knocking seems to come from the valve itself, the piston or seals may be worn and chattering. Replace the piston and seal kit with US Water Systems parts.
- Install water hammer arrestors: If banging occurs when the valve shifts cycles, a plumber can install hammer arrestors near the softener or main lines.
