Possible Causes
Clogged inlet strainer, Fouled resin bed, Partially closed bypass or service valve, Internal valve obstruction
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Do not open pressurized components without isolating and depressurizing the system.
- Compare pressure in bypass: Place the softener in bypass and check if house pressure improves. If it does, the restriction is within the softener.
- Check inlet strainer and pre-filter: Isolate the softener, remove and clean the inlet strainer and any pre-filter cartridges.
- Inspect valves: Ensure the service valves are fully open and the bypass is correctly positioned.
- Resin fouling: If the resin bed is heavily fouled with iron or sediment, consider performing a resin cleaning procedure or replacing the Viessmann ion-exchange resin.
