Possible Causes
Corrupted control programming, Loose or oxidized control harness connection, Failed main control board, Power surge damage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the WaterBoss softener from the outlet before removing any covers. WaterBoss units operate on low voltage but are still connected to mains power through the transformer.
- Power reset: Unplug the transformer from the wall for 5 minutes. Plug back in and check if E1 clears. Re-enter time of day and regeneration settings per the WaterBoss manual.
- Check low-voltage connector: Remove the top cover. Inspect the low-voltage plug from the transformer to the control board. Reseat the connector firmly and look for corrosion or bent pins.
- Inspect control harness: Verify that all small harnesses from the display keypad to the main control board are fully seated and not pinched or damaged.
- Check for moisture: Look for condensation or water intrusion around the control board. If present, dry thoroughly, correct any leaks from the valve body or brine well, and retry.
- If E1 persists: The main control board is likely faulty. Replacement typically requires transferring the wiring harnesses one-by-one to the new board. If you are not comfortable with electronics, contact a qualified technician.
