Possible Causes
Exhausted ion exchange resin, Iron-fouled resin, Incorrect hardness setting, Insufficient brine concentration
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Place the unit in bypass before opening the brine tank or valve body. Unplug the transformer if removing covers.
- Test hardness: Use a hardness test kit to compare raw water (before softener) and treated water (after softener). If both are similar, the softener is not exchanging ions effectively.
- Check salt level: Ensure there is adequate salt in the brine cabinet and that it is not bridged (see separate 'salt bridge' entry).
- Run a manual regeneration: Initiate a full regeneration cycle and retest water hardness after completion.
- Use resin cleaner: If you have iron in your water, add a resin cleaner (approved for water softeners) to the brine well and run several regenerations to restore capacity.
- Replace resin: If hardness remains high after cleaning and proper regeneration, the resin bed may be worn out (typically after many years) and should be replaced.
