Safety first: If odor is severe or accompanied by discoloration, consider using bottled water until the cause is identified.

• Test raw water: Bypass the Watersoft unit and check if the odor is present in untreated water. If so, a separate treatment (e.g., oxidizing filter) is needed.
• Sanitize softener: Follow Watersoft’s sanitization procedure: typically, add an approved disinfectant (such as unscented household bleach in a specified amount) to the brine well and run a full regeneration.
• Clean brine tank: Empty the brine tank, scrub interior surfaces with a mild bleach solution, rinse thoroughly, and refill with fresh salt.
• Increase usage/regen frequency: If the home is vacant often, program more frequent regenerations to prevent stagnation.
