Possible Causes

Defective rotor position switch, Stalled or seized drive motor, Damaged wiring harness to motor/position switch, Control board output failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the softener or switch off the dedicated breaker before opening the cabinet. Shut off water at the inlet bypass if you will be removing any components.

Steps to check:

  • Power reset: Disconnect power for 5 minutes, then restore. If ERR1 returns immediately when a manual regeneration is started, continue below.
  • Inspect motor and cam: Remove the top cover. Locate the drive motor on the valve head. Check that the motor is firmly mounted and that the cam/gear assembly is not jammed or broken. Try turning the cam slightly by hand (with power off). It should move with moderate resistance, not be locked solid.
  • Check wiring: Inspect the wiring harness from the control board to the motor and rotor position switch. Look for loose plugs, corrosion, or damaged insulation. Reseat all connectors firmly.
  • Test motor operation: With the unit reassembled and powered, initiate a manual regeneration and listen for the motor. If it hums but does not turn, or does nothing at all, the motor is likely failed.
  • Check position switch: If the motor runs continuously and ERR1 appears, the rotor position switch may not be signaling the control. Inspect the switch and its actuator on the valve cam for damage or misalignment.

When to replace parts: If the motor does not run when commanded and wiring is intact, replace the drive motor assembly. If the motor runs but the control never detects position, replace the rotor position switch or the complete valve head assembly. If new motor/switch do not resolve ERR1, the electronic control board may be defective and should be replaced or diagnosed by a technician.
