Possible Causes

Stuck brine valve, Cracked brine piston, Salt or iron buildup in brine valve, Failed brine valve solenoid (if equipped)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power and place the softener in bypass. Wear gloves and eye protection when working around brine (salt) solution.

Steps:

  • Check brine line: Inspect the brine line from the valve head to the brine tank. Ensure it is not kinked, pinched, or blocked. Verify the brine safety float moves freely.
  • Access brine valve: Remove the valve cover on the control head. Locate the brine valve or brine piston assembly. Look for signs of salt crust, iron sludge, or mechanical damage.
  • Clean components: Disassemble the brine valve according to the service manual. Soak removable parts in warm water to dissolve salt buildup. Use a soft brush to remove iron deposits.
  • Inspect seals and piston: Check O-rings and piston surfaces for cuts, flattening, or cracking. Replace the brine valve/piston kit if any damage is found.
  • Check solenoid (if present): If your model uses an electric brine valve solenoid, verify the coil is not burnt and the plunger moves freely. Replace the solenoid if it is stuck or open-circuited.

After service: Reassemble, return the bypass to service, restore power, and run a manual regeneration. Monitor the brine draw and refill stages. If ERR3 reappears, the control board may not be sensing brine valve position correctly and may require replacement.
