Possible Causes

Drive motor overloaded by stiff valve, Shorted motor windings, Incorrect line voltage, Binding in gear train

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power and place the softener in bypass before working on the valve head or motor.

Steps:

  • Check for mechanical binding: Remove the top cover and inspect the gear train and cam. Look for broken gears, misalignment, or foreign objects.
  • Manually rotate valve: With power off, attempt to rotate the cam through a full cycle. If it is extremely stiff, the rotor and seal assembly or internal valve body may be damaged and should be replaced.
  • Inspect motor: Check the drive motor for signs of overheating (discoloration, burnt smell). Ensure mounting screws are tight and the motor shaft is not bent.
  • Verify voltage: Confirm the unit is connected to the correct supply voltage and that there are no brownouts or surges. Avoid sharing the circuit with large appliances.

Resolution: If the valve moves freely by hand but the motor stalls or overheats, replace the drive motor assembly. If the motor is good but the valve is stiff, replace the rotor and seal assembly or the complete valve head assembly. Persistent ERR6 after these repairs may indicate a control board issue.
