Whirlpool Pro Series
Rapid Valve Shifts or High Flow Changes
Softener causes water hammer or banging pipes during regeneration
Advertisements
Possible Causes
High household water pressure, Fast-acting valve transitions, Inadequate pipe support, No water hammer arrestor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: High water pressure can be hazardous. If unsure, consult a plumber.
Steps:
- Measure pressure: Use a pressure gauge on a nearby faucet to check static water pressure. If above 80 psi (5.5 bar), install or adjust a pressure-reducing valve.
- Secure piping: Ensure pipes near the softener are properly strapped and supported to reduce movement.
- Install hammer arrestor: Consider adding a water hammer arrestor near the softener or main line to absorb shock.
Resolution: If noise persists, consult a plumber to evaluate the plumbing layout. The softener valve itself is usually not defective but may accentuate existing water hammer issues.
