Softener emits a foul or musty odor from the brine tank

Safety: Wear gloves and eye protection. Work in a well-ventilated area.

Steps:

• Empty brine tank: Scoop out old salt and brine. Use a wet/dry vacuum if needed.
• Clean tank: Wash the inside of the brine tank with a mild bleach solution (about 1/4 cup household bleach per gallon of water). Scrub surfaces and rinse thoroughly.
• Clean brine well and float: Remove and clean the brine well and float assembly with the same solution. Rinse well.
• Refill with fresh salt: Use only high-purity water softener salt pellets recommended for Whirlpool Pro Series.

Resolution: For persistent odors, sanitize the entire softener following Whirlpool's sanitization procedure, which typically involves adding a measured amount of bleach to the brine well and running a regeneration. If odors continue, consider replacing the brine tank assembly.
