Whirlpool Pro Series
Over-Regeneration or Excessive Salt Dosage
Softener uses salt very quickly, requiring frequent refills

Possible Causes
Hardness set too high, Capacity set too low, Brine refill time too long, Flow meter not counting correctly
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: No internal electrical work is required for basic adjustments. If opening the control, unplug the unit first.
Steps:
- Check programming: Compare your actual water hardness (from a test or water report) to the hardness setting on the control. Reduce the setting if it is significantly higher than actual.
- Adjust capacity: Ensure the grain capacity is appropriate for your resin volume and household size. Avoid setting capacity too low, which forces frequent regenerations.
- Review salt setting: If your model allows, reduce the salt dose per regeneration to a more efficient level recommended in the manual.
- Verify flow meter: If the unit regenerates much more often than expected, the flow meter may be over-counting. Check for ERR5/ERR8 codes and inspect the turbine for debris.
Resolution: After reprogramming, monitor salt usage for several weeks. If salt consumption remains abnormally high, replace the turbine flow meter assembly and recheck settings.
