Possible Causes
Defective keypad membrane, Moisture intrusion into control panel, Loose ribbon cable between keypad and board, Damaged user interface board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the softener before removing the control cover or keypad.
Steps to check:
- 1. Inspect for moisture: Remove the control cover and look for condensation, water stains, or salt dust on the keypad and board. Dry gently with a soft cloth.
- 2. Reseat ribbon cable: If the keypad connects via a flat ribbon cable, unplug and reinsert it fully into the connector on the control board.
- 3. Test button response: Plug the unit back in and test each button. If some or all buttons still fail, the keypad membrane is likely defective.
- 4. Replace keypad or UI assembly: Order the correct Whirlpool user interface or control cover assembly and replace according to the service instructions.
When to call a technician: If the keypad and cable are new and E1 persists, the main control board may also be damaged and require professional diagnosis.
