Possible Causes

Worn cam gear on rotor, Stripped motor gear, Binding in control valve, Faulty position encoder or switch

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the softener and place it in bypass. Relieve water pressure before opening the valve head.

Steps to check:

  • 1. Mark current position: Note the rotor/cam position before disassembly to aid reassembly.
  • 2. Inspect cam and gears: Remove the motor and cam gear assembly from the control valve. Look for missing teeth, cracks, or excessive wear. Replace damaged gears or cam.
  • 3. Check valve for binding: Remove the rotor and disc and inspect the valve body for scoring, debris, or foreign objects. Clean thoroughly and lubricate seals with silicone grease approved for potable water (if specified by Whirlpool).
  • 4. Test motor: With the motor removed, briefly power it (following Whirlpool test procedure) to confirm it runs smoothly. Replace if it stalls or is noisy.
  • 5. Reassemble and test: Reinstall components, restore water and power, and run a manual regeneration to verify that E3 does not recur.

When to call a technician: If the valve body is damaged or the rotor will not seat properly, professional replacement of the valve assembly is recommended.
