Display shows E5 and unit will not enter regeneration when commanded
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the softener before testing the motor or board. Bypass water if you need to remove the valve head.
Steps to check:
- 1. Inspect motor connector: Ensure the motor plug is fully seated on the control board and at the motor terminals.
- 2. Test motor resistance: Use a multimeter to measure motor coil resistance and compare to Whirlpool specifications. Replace the motor if open or shorted.
- 3. Check for 24V (or specified) output: During a commanded regeneration, the board should send low-voltage power to the motor. If the motor is good but no voltage is present, the board's motor drive circuit is likely faulty.
- 4. Replace defective component: Replace the rotor/valve motor if it fails tests. If the motor is good but E5 persists, replace the electronic control board.
When to call a technician: If you are not comfortable measuring live low-voltage circuits, seek professional service.
