Possible Causes

Failed turbine flow sensor, Turbine wheel jammed by debris, Broken turbine magnet, Damaged sensor wiring to control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit and place it in bypass. Depressurize the system by opening a nearby faucet.

Steps to check:

  • 1. Locate the turbine assembly: On Whirlpool softeners, the turbine/flow sensor is usually in the outlet side of the control valve, accessible by removing a retaining clip and pulling out the sensor housing.
  • 2. Inspect and clean the turbine: Remove the turbine wheel and check for sand, iron, or plastic shavings. Clean with water and a soft brush. Ensure the wheel spins freely on its shaft.
  • 3. Check the sensor and magnet: Verify the small magnet in the turbine is intact and not cracked. Inspect the Hall-effect sensor or reed sensor for damage. Check the wiring harness for pinched or broken wires.
  • 4. Test operation: Reinstall the turbine and sensor. Restore water and power. Run water at a faucet and check that the display shows flow or that the usage counter increments. If ERR3 returns, replace the turbine/flow sensor assembly.

When to call a technician: If a new turbine sensor does not clear ERR3, the main control board may not be reading the sensor correctly and should be diagnosed by a professional.
