Possible Causes
Hardness programmed too low, Incorrect water test results, Control board misprogrammed, Flow meter miscounting usage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: No internal electrical work is required for this adjustment, but do not open the control housing while powered if you are unsure.
Steps to check:
- 1. Test raw water hardness: Use a Whirlpool hardness test strip or kit on untreated water (before the softener). Compare to the chart to determine grains per gallon (gpg).
- 2. Reprogram hardness: Enter the programming mode on the control panel and set the hardness to match your test result, adding extra grains if you have iron in the water (follow Whirlpool guidelines).
- 3. Verify regeneration frequency: Check the capacity and salt settings to ensure the unit regenerates at appropriate intervals. Adjust if the unit is regenerating too often.
- 4. Monitor water feel: Over the next few days, monitor water feel and spot formation on fixtures. Adjust hardness setting slightly if needed.
When to call a technician: If the display hardness does not change when reprogrammed, the control board or keypad may be faulty.
