Possible Causes
Inlet and outlet reversed, Bypass left in bypass position, Softener installed on hot water line, Drain or brine lines not connected correctly
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Shut off main water and relieve pressure before changing plumbing connections.
Steps to check:
- 1. Verify inlet/outlet: Confirm the home's incoming cold supply is connected to the valve inlet and the outlet goes to the house. Whirlpool valves are marked IN and OUT.
- 2. Check bypass position: Ensure the bypass valve is in service, not bypass.
- 3. Confirm cold line: Make sure the softener is installed on the main cold water line, not on a hot water branch.
- 4. Run initial regeneration: After correct installation, perform a full manual regeneration to charge the resin bed.
When to call a technician: If you are unsure of your home's plumbing layout, a plumber or water treatment professional can verify correct installation.
