Possible Causes
Exhausted or worn-out resin, Insufficient salt dosage, Salt bridge preventing brine draw, Bypass valve partially open
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Place the softener in bypass and unplug before opening any components. Relieve pressure by opening a faucet.
Steps to check:
- 1. Confirm bypass position: Ensure the Whirlpool bypass valve handles are in the service position (not bypass). Adjust if necessary.
- 2. Check salt level and bridges: Open the brine tank and verify adequate salt. Break up any hard crust (salt bridge) so salt contacts the water.
- 3. Verify brine draw: Start a manual regeneration and watch the brine well. The water level should drop during brine draw. If it does not, clean the venturi/injector and brine line.
- 4. Test hardness: Use test strips on softened water after a full regeneration. If hardness remains high, the resin may be exhausted or iron-fouled and require replacement.
When to call a technician: Resin replacement and valve removal are advanced; if you are not experienced with plumbing, contact a professional.
