Possible Causes
Failed defrost heater on evaporator, Open defrost thermostat/thermal fuse, Defective defrost sensor, Control board not initiating defrost
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the appliance before accessing the evaporator and defrost components. Risk of electric shock and sharp edges.
Steps:
- 1. Inspect for ice build-up: Remove the interior rear panel. If the evaporator is encased in solid ice, the defrost system is likely at fault.
- 2. Manually defrost: Switch off and allow all ice to melt. Use towels to collect water. Do not use sharp tools to chip ice.
- 3. Test defrost heater: Locate the heater element attached to or beneath the evaporator. Disconnect its connectors and measure resistance. An open circuit indicates a failed heater.
- 4. Check defrost thermostat/thermal fuse: If fitted, test for continuity when the thermostat is cold (below its closing temperature). An open thermostat or blown thermal fuse will prevent defrost.
- 5. Inspect defrost sensor: Some models use a dedicated defrost NTC. Test its resistance and replace if out of range.
- 6. Control board: If all defrost components test good, the control board may not be initiating defrost cycles and may require replacement.
