Possible Causes
Failed evaporator NTC sensor, Sensor wiring damaged by ice or rubbing on evaporator, Oxidized connector at control board, Control board sensor circuit fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Always unplug the appliance before removing covers or touching internal components. Sharp metal edges are present around the evaporator.
Steps to diagnose and fix:
- 1. Defrost first: If there is heavy ice build-up, switch off and leave the door open for several hours or use towels to catch melt water. This exposes the evaporator and sensor.
- 2. Access the evaporator: Remove the internal rear panel inside the wine compartment (usually a plastic cover held by screws). Behind it you will see the evaporator coil and a small sensor clipped or taped to the coil or nearby bracket.
- 3. Inspect the sensor: Look for a cracked sensor body, broken insulation, or wires pulled tight. Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the evaporator surface as originally installed.
- 4. Electrical test: Disconnect the sensor plug and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the expected NTC value at the current temperature (often similar to the cabinet sensor range). If the reading is open circuit or shorted, replace the sensor.
- 5. Replace sensor: Order the correct AEG evaporator NTC sensor for your model. Install it in the same location and orientation, securing it with the original clip or aluminum tape. Route the cable away from the fan blades and sharp fins.
- 6. Check board connection: At the main PCB, unplug and replug the evaporator sensor connector to clean contacts. If E2 remains with a known-good sensor, the control board may be defective and should be replaced by a professional.
