E5 displayed, compressor does not start or stops shortly after starting, cabinet warms up

Safety warning: Work on the compressor area only with the appliance unplugged. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system.

Diagnostic steps:

• 1. Listen for compressor: When powered, you may hear a click from the relay and then a hum followed by another click if the compressor fails to start. This pattern suggests a start device issue.
• 2. Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel. The compressor, start relay/PTC, and overload protector are located here.
• 3. Inspect start device: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the start relay/PTC and overload for signs of burning or cracking.
• 4. Test start relay/PTC: With a multimeter, check for continuity according to the part specification. A rattling sound when shaken or open circuit often indicates failure.
• 5. Replace start device: If faulty, install an OEM AEG-compatible compressor start relay/PTC and overload protector. Ensure each terminal is correctly positioned on the compressor pins.
• 6. Evaluate compressor: If a new start device does not resolve E5 and the compressor still fails to run or draws very high current, the compressor may be seized and will require professional replacement with refrigerant handling.
• 7. Control board check: If the compressor never receives power (no click, no hum), the main control board relay or wiring may be defective and should be diagnosed by a technician.
