Possible Causes
Failed evaporator thermistor, Thermistor wiring harness damage near evaporator, Corroded connector from moisture, Faulty main control board sensor circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Disconnect power before accessing internal components. Evaporator area may have sharp metal fins; wear cut-resistant gloves.
- Locate the evaporator sensor: Remove interior shelves and the rear inner panel of the wine compartment (usually held by screws). Behind this panel is the evaporator coil and a small sensor clipped to the coil or nearby tubing.
- Inspect for ice and moisture: If the evaporator is heavily iced, allow it to fully defrost (door open, unit unplugged) for several hours. Excess ice can damage or dislodge the sensor.
- Check wiring and connector: Look for brittle, cracked, or corroded wires leading from the sensor to the cabinet wall. Ensure the connector is tight and free of corrosion.
- Test the thermistor: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to Amana specifications at a known temperature (e.g., place the sensor in a cup of ice water and check for the specified resistance). Replace if readings are out of range or unstable.
- Replace the evaporator thermistor: Unclip the old sensor from the evaporator, install the new one in the same location, and route the wiring along the original path, avoiding contact with sharp fins.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the inner panel, restore power, and monitor operation. If E2 returns with a new sensor and good wiring, the main control board may need replacement by a professional.
