Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Faulty PTC starter, Overheated compressor, Faulty main control board output
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the appliance. Work carefully around the compressor and high-voltage components. Only attempt if you are comfortable with electrical testing.
Steps to address E5 compressor start issues:
- 1. Ventilation check: Ensure the wine cooler has adequate clearance around the sides and back. Overheating due to poor ventilation can trigger overload protection.
- 2. Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and overload protector.
- 3. Inspect start relay/PTC: Disconnect the relay from the compressor terminals. Shake it gently; if it rattles or shows signs of burning or melting, it is likely defective.
- 4. Electrical test: Use a multimeter to check continuity through the relay/PTC according to Brandt specifications. Replace if open or shorted.
- 5. Check compressor windings: With the relay removed, measure resistance between the compressor terminals (C, S, R). Values should be finite and consistent with a small hermetic compressor. Any open winding or direct short to ground indicates a failed compressor.
- 6. Replace start components: If the compressor tests good, install a new Brandt-compatible start relay/PTC and overload protector. Reconnect wiring as per original configuration.
- 7. Restore power and test: Refit the rear panel, plug in the unit, and listen for the compressor starting smoothly. If E5 persists and the compressor does not start, the main control board may not be sending power and may require replacement by a professional.
