Possible Causes
Blocked condenser airflow, Extremely dirty condenser coil, Failing condenser fan, Overheating compressor triggering thermal protector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the wine cooler and allow the compressor to cool before touching it. Metal parts can be very hot.
E16 often indicates that the system is overheating and a protection circuit has been triggered.
- Check installation: Ensure there is adequate ventilation around the wine cooler, especially at the rear and sides. Follow De Dietrich clearance recommendations.
- Clean the condenser: Remove the rear lower panel and use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust from the condenser coil.
- Verify condenser fan operation: Spin the fan by hand and check for free movement. Replace the fan motor if it is seized or noisy.
- Inspect for obstructions: Make sure nothing is blocking the air intake or exhaust grilles.
- Allow cool-down: Leave the unit unplugged for at least 30–60 minutes to allow the compressor's internal overload to reset.
- Restart and monitor: Plug the unit back in and monitor compressor temperature and operation. If E16 returns quickly despite good airflow, the compressor may be failing and should be evaluated by a professional.
