Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Faulty inverter module (on inverter models), Open compressor winding, Main PCB compressor relay failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Danger: Work on compressor circuits only with the appliance unplugged. High voltage is present when powered. Refrigerant system must not be opened without proper certification.

E8 on some De Dietrich wine coolers indicates the control board detects a compressor start failure.

  • Listen for symptoms: When powered, you may hear a click from the relay but no compressor hum, or repeated clicking.
  • Access compressor area: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor, start device (relay/PTC), and wiring.
  • Inspect start device: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals and check the start relay/PTC for burn marks or a burnt smell.
  • Test compressor windings: With all wires removed, measure resistance between the three compressor pins. You should see low but finite resistances; any open circuit or direct short to ground indicates a failed compressor (requires professional replacement).
  • Replace start device: If the compressor windings test good, replace the start relay/PTC or inverter module with the correct De Dietrich part.
  • Check board relay: If the compressor never receives power, the main PCB relay may be defective. Visual inspection may show heat damage; replacement of the board is usually required.
  • Reassemble and test: Refit covers, restore power, and monitor compressor start-up and cooling performance. If E8 persists and the compressor is electrically sound, contact a qualified refrigeration technician.
