Possible Causes
Failed evaporator NTC sensor, sensor shorted by moisture or ice, broken sensor harness, defective control board sensor channel
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before accessing internal components. Beware of sharp sheet metal around the evaporator compartment.
Diagnostic and repair steps:
- Defrost first: If there is heavy frost on the evaporator, unplug the unit and allow it to fully defrost (doors open, towels in place) for several hours. After defrosting, power back on to see if E2 returns.
- Access the evaporator sensor: Remove the interior rear panel inside the cabinet to expose the evaporator coil. The evaporator sensor is usually clipped to the coil or mounted in a small well near the coil.
- Visual inspection: Look for corrosion, broken insulation, or a sensor that has come loose from the coil. Ensure the sensor is firmly attached and not dangling in free air.
- Measure resistance: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor from the harness and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to expected NTC values at the current temperature (often similar to the cabinet sensor). A reading of OL or near 0 Ω indicates a bad sensor.
- Replace sensor: If readings are incorrect or the sensor body is cracked, install a new evaporator temperature sensor (NTC). Clip it securely to the coil in the same position as the original.
- Check wiring and board: If the sensor tests good, inspect the harness back to the main control PCB. Repair any damaged wires. If wiring is intact and E2 persists, replace the control board.
