Possible Causes
Defrost thermistor failure on one evaporator, sensor dislodged from coil, wiring harness damage, control board input failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power and allow any ice to melt before handling the evaporator area.
Steps to address E3:
- Identify affected zone: Check which zone is frosting excessively or not maintaining temperature; that zone's evaporator sensor is suspect.
- Access evaporator: Remove shelves and the rear panel in the affected zone to expose the evaporator coil and sensor.
- Inspect sensor placement: Ensure the sensor is clipped firmly to the coil or tubing and not hanging loose. Reattach if necessary.
- Check wiring: Look for brittle or cracked insulation, especially where wires pass through foam or metal. Repair or replace damaged sections.
- Test sensor: With power off, disconnect and measure resistance. Replace the sensor if readings are open, shorted, or out of spec.
- Reassemble and monitor: After replacing the sensor, reassemble panels, restore power, and monitor for recurrence of E3.
