Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay, faulty PTC start device, open overload protector, seized or locked compressor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before working at the rear of the unit. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system; that requires a licensed technician.

Steps to address F5:

  • Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor, start device, and wiring.
  • Listen for symptoms: With the panel off (but before touching anything), briefly power the unit and listen: a repeated clicking from the compressor area suggests start device or overload issues. Unplug again before proceeding.
  • Inspect start relay and overload: Remove the plastic cover on the side of the compressor. Check for burnt smell, discoloration, or melted plastic on the start relay/PTC and overload protector.
  • Test start components: With a multimeter, check continuity through the overload and measure resistance of the PTC relay. If either is open or visibly damaged, replace the start device assembly with a Fisher & Paykel–approved part.
  • Check compressor windings (advanced): Measure resistance between the three compressor terminals (C, S, R). Values should be finite and consistent with the compressor label. Any short to ground or open winding indicates a failed compressor.
  • Reassemble and test: After replacing the start device, restore power and monitor. If F5 returns and the compressor hums then clicks off, the compressor may be mechanically locked and will require professional replacement.
