Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay or PTC, open overload protector, low line voltage or power board failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the wine cooler before accessing the compressor compartment. Capacitors can hold a charge; do not touch terminals with bare hands.

Steps to check E5:

  • Verify power supply: Plug the unit directly into a properly grounded wall outlet (no extension cords). Confirm outlet voltage is within 110–125 VAC using a meter if available.
  • Access compressor components: Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and overload protector.
  • Inspect start relay and overload: Remove the relay/overload assembly from the compressor terminals. Shake the relay gently; if it rattles or smells burnt, it is likely bad. Check for discoloration or melted plastic.
  • Test continuity: With a multimeter, check continuity through the overload and relay according to the service manual specs. Replace if open or out of range.
  • Replace start device: Install a Frigidaire-approved compressor start relay/overload kit for your model. Push it firmly onto the compressor pins and reconnect wiring.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the rear cover, restore power, and listen for the compressor to start smoothly. Monitor for recurrence of E5.

Important: If the compressor hums and clicks off even with a new start device, the compressor itself may be mechanically locked or internally damaged. This requires a sealed-system technician.
