Possible Causes

Failed ambient thermistor, disconnected ambient sensor harness, damaged wiring near control board, faulty main control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before servicing.

  • Locate ambient sensor: On many GE wine coolers, the ambient thermistor is mounted near the front grille, control panel, or behind the cabinet near the air intake.
  • Visual inspection: Check that the sensor is not broken, and that its wires are intact and not chewed, pinched, or corroded.
  • Test sensor: Disconnect the ambient thermistor from the control board harness and measure resistance at room temperature. Compare to GE’s thermistor spec. Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
  • Control board: If the sensor tests good, inspect the control board for damage. Replace the board if the E3 code persists with a known-good sensor.

After replacement, clear the code by disconnecting power for 5 minutes, then restore and verify normal operation.
