Possible Causes

Overheated compressor, failed compressor overload protector, blocked condenser airflow, defective main control board compressor relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before accessing rear components. The compressor and condenser may be hot.

  • Check ventilation: Ensure the wine cooler has proper clearance around the sides, back, and top as specified by GE. Clean any dust from the condenser coils and grille using a soft brush and vacuum.
  • Inspect condenser fan: With power briefly restored, confirm the condenser fan (if equipped) runs when the compressor should be on. If the fan is not running, unplug the unit and test/replace the fan motor.
  • Overload protector: Unplug the unit, remove the rear lower panel, and locate the compressor start device/overload. Inspect for signs of burning or cracking. Replace the overload or start device assembly if damaged.
  • Control board: If airflow is good and the overload is good but E5 persists, the main control board’s compressor relay may be faulty. Replace the control board if the compressor does not receive power when commanded.

If the compressor is extremely hot or noisy, a sealed system issue may exist and should be handled by a licensed technician.
