Possible Causes
Failed PTC start relay, open start capacitor (if used), loose compressor electrical connections, defective compressor windings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit and be cautious around sharp metal edges at the rear.
- Access compressor: Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor and its electrical start device.
- Inspect start device: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the PTC relay and overload for burn marks, rattling pieces, or melted plastic. Replace the start device assembly if damaged.
- Check connections: Ensure all wires are firmly attached to the compressor terminals and start device.
- Test compressor: With the unit unplugged, remove the start device and measure resistance between compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Infinite or shorted readings indicate a failed compressor, which requires professional sealed system service.
- Reassemble and test: Install the new start device, reattach the cover, restore power, and verify that the compressor starts and E8 clears.
