Possible Causes
Failed compressor, Loss of refrigerant charge from leak, Blocked capillary tube, Non-running condenser fan motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Warning: Sealed-system repairs (refrigerant, compressor replacement) require EPA-certified technicians. Do not attempt to open the sealed system yourself.
- Check if compressor is running: With the unit plugged in and calling for cooling, place your hand on the compressor. It should vibrate slightly and feel warm after a few minutes. If it is cold and silent, it is not running.
- Inspect condenser fan: Confirm that the rear condenser fan is spinning when the compressor is supposed to run. If the fan is not running, replace the hOmeLabs condenser fan motor and retest cooling.
- Feel condenser coils: Carefully touch the condenser coils. They should be warm when the compressor is running. If the compressor is hot but coils are cool, there may be a refrigerant issue.
- Listen for short cycling: If the compressor hums briefly then clicks off repeatedly, suspect a bad start relay/overload (see E5) before assuming compressor failure.
- Call a professional: If the compressor runs continuously, the fan runs, but there is no cooling and no frost on the evaporator, a sealed-system leak or restriction is likely. Contact an authorized hOmeLabs service provider.
