Possible Causes

Defrost heater failure, Defrost sensor not detecting coil temperature, Blocked drain causing ice accumulation, Defrost control fault on main PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the appliance before defrosting or accessing the evaporator. Water from melting ice can create slip hazards.

Steps to address dF:

  • Manual defrost: Open the door and leave the unit unplugged until all ice on the rear panel and shelves has melted. Use towels to absorb water; do not use sharp tools to chip ice.
  • Check drain: Locate the evaporator drain hole at the bottom of the rear panel. Clear any blockage with a soft brush or pipe cleaner so defrost water can exit properly.
  • Access evaporator: Remove the internal rear panel to inspect the evaporator coil, defrost heater, and sensor.
  • Inspect heater and wiring: Look for breaks or burn marks on the heater element and its wiring. Test heater resistance with a multimeter; an open circuit indicates failure.
  • Test defrost sensor: Measure resistance of the defrost/evaporator sensor at room temperature and compare to expected NTC values. Replace if out of range.
  • Replace faulty components: Install Hoover-compatible defrost heater and/or sensor as needed. Ensure good contact with the evaporator and secure wiring.
  • Control board check: If heater and sensor are good but dF recurs, the defrost control on the main PCB may be faulty and require replacement.
