Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Faulty compressor overload protector, Seized or locked compressor, Main control board not supplying correct start voltage

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit. Work only if you are comfortable around mains voltage components. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system.

Steps to check E5:

  • Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor and electrical box on its side.
  • Inspect start device: The start relay/PTC and overload protector are usually housed in a plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check for burn marks, melted plastic, or a burnt smell.
  • Check connections: Ensure all spade connectors are tight on the start device and overload. Loose connections can cause intermittent E5.
  • Test start relay/PTC: With the unit unplugged, remove the start device and shake it gently. If it rattles excessively or shows signs of burning, replace it with a Hoover-compatible compressor start device.
  • Test compressor windings (advanced): Using a multimeter, measure resistance between the three compressor pins. You should see finite, non-zero resistances. A short to ground or open winding indicates a failed compressor, which requires professional replacement.
  • Replace faulty start components: Install new start relay/PTC and overload protector if they test bad. Refit the cover securely.
  • If E5 remains: The main PCB may not be sending proper start voltage, or the compressor itself may be mechanically seized. In these cases, contact a refrigeration technician.
