Wine cooler shows E5 and the compressor or cooling module does not start or shuts off quickly.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before removing the rear panel. The compressor and start components operate at mains voltage.
Steps to address E5:
- 1. Check ventilation: Ensure there is adequate clearance around the wine cooler (typically at least 2–3 inches at the back and sides). Clean dust from the rear grille and condenser coils with a soft brush or vacuum.
- 2. Access the compressor area: Remove the lower rear service panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and overload protector.
- 3. Inspect start components: Look for a small plastic module plugged onto the compressor terminals (start relay/PTC) and a round or flat overload device. Check for burn marks, melted plastic, or a burnt smell.
- 4. Test continuity (advanced): With the unit unplugged, remove the start relay and overload from the compressor. Use a multimeter to check continuity through the overload and appropriate resistance through the PTC/relay. An open overload or physically rattling relay indicates failure.
- 5. Replace faulty parts: Install a new Insignia-compatible compressor start relay/PTC and overload protector if they test bad or show visible damage. Ensure they are firmly seated on the compressor terminals.
- 6. Evaluate the compressor and control board: If start components are good but the compressor still does not run and E5 persists, the compressor itself may be seized or the main control board may not be sending power. At this point, professional diagnosis with proper tools is recommended.
Warning: Do not bypass the overload or relay; doing so can cause fire or permanent compressor damage.
