Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Open compressor overload protector, Low line voltage or power supply issue, Faulty main control board relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before accessing the rear service compartment. Capacitors and compressor terminals can be hazardous.
Diagnostic steps:
- Listen for compressor behavior: When powered, does the compressor click on and off quickly, hum then stop, or not attempt to start at all? E5 often accompanies start failures.
- Access compressor components: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and overload protector.
- Inspect start device: Remove the start relay/overload assembly from the compressor pins. Shake the relay gently; if it rattles or shows burn marks, it may be defective.
- Test continuity: With a multimeter, check continuity through the overload and start device per JennAir specs. Replace if open or visibly damaged.
- Check wiring and board relay: Inspect the harness from the control board to the compressor. Look for burnt connectors or loose terminals. If wiring is good and a new start device does not resolve E5, the control board's compressor relay may be faulty.
- Verify supply voltage: Have a qualified person confirm correct voltage at the outlet and at the unit's terminal block.
- Compressor health: If the compressor draws locked-rotor current and will not start even with a new start device, the compressor itself may be seized and requires professional replacement.
