Possible Causes
Failed compressor, Open compressor start relay or overload, Severe refrigerant leak, Faulty main control board not energizing compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before accessing the rear compartment. Refrigerant work must be done by an EPA-certified technician.
Steps:
- Listen for compressor: With power on (before unplugging), check if the compressor hums or clicks. No sound suggests it is not being energized.
- Check condenser fan: If the condenser fan does not run, the compressor may also not be receiving power.
- Test start components: See E5 for testing the compressor start relay and overload. Replace if defective.
- Inspect control board: If start components are good but the compressor never receives voltage, the main control board may be faulty and should be replaced.
- Sealed system diagnosis: If the compressor runs but there is no cooling and the condenser stays cool, there may be a refrigerant leak or internal restriction. This requires professional sealed system service.
