Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay, Overheated or weak compressor, Faulty overload protector on compressor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the wine cooler before accessing the rear compartment. The compressor and surrounding components can be hot; allow them to cool.

Steps to address E5:

  • Ventilation check: Ensure there is adequate clearance around the cooler (typically at least a few inches at the back and sides). Blocked airflow can cause compressor overheating and E5 errors.
  • Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and overload protector.
  • Inspect start relay and overload: The relay and overload are usually mounted directly on the compressor terminals under a plastic cover. Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or a burnt smell.
  • Test the start relay: With the unit unplugged, remove the relay and shake it gently; if it rattles or pieces fall out, it is likely bad. Use a multimeter to check continuity according to the relay type (PTC or mechanical).
  • Test the overload protector: Check for continuity across the overload device. An open overload that does not reset when cool indicates failure.
  • Replace faulty components: Install a new compressor start relay and/or overload protector compatible with your Kenmore model. Ensure they are firmly seated on the compressor terminals and the cover is reinstalled.
  • Power up and monitor: Restore power and listen for the compressor to start smoothly. Monitor for several hours to confirm normal cooling and that E5 does not reappear.

Important: If the compressor hums briefly and then clicks off even with new start components, the compressor itself may be failing and should be evaluated by a licensed refrigeration technician.
